"Kara provides a warm and caring yoga place for us to explore our boundaries and perhaps one day to go past."

The true function of a yoga practice is to suspend the constant turnings of the mind, sometimes referred to as the "thousand chattering monkeys." In our first yoga class we may observe that we are tight, inflexible, weak, or unable to balance. From this starting place, the practice begins. In time, the body begins to change, as well as the ability to focus and be still. Unlike many forms of exercise which we may practice in a "checked out" state (such as running on a treadmill while watching TV), in yoga practice we actually "check in." This is not easy at first, which is why a minimum three-month commitment is strongly suggested when beginning the study of yoga.

Naga yoga is a mindful and powerful practice, linking breath to movement. Class begins on the floor, with exercises and movements designed to free up energy in the spine and tone the core of the body. Warm-up continues with asana (yoga postures) from classical Ashtanga yoga, including sun salutations and standing poses. The series continues with standing balances and floor asanas. Each class includes plenty of forward and back bending to balance out the body. The ending sequence includes Savasana (corpse pose), relaxation, and a brief meditation. Naga yoga is a series, which means that students do essentially the same sequence in every class. This way, it can eventually be memorized so the student can also practice at home, work, or even on the beach!

It is noteworthy that the repetitive nature of a yoga series does not produce boredom, but over a period of time actually enables the student to advance and go deeper into their practice. It also means that both the beginner and more advanced student can attend the same class, with some variations and modifications. All students are encouraged to move slowly, with attention and compassion for themselves and the state of their bodies. During class, music may be included to set a tone and help students stay focused.

Naga yoga instructors lead classes, demonstrate, and move around the class helping individuals by making adjustments as needed. This is a hands-on approach to teaching yoga. The instructors are highly skilled at working with students. At times, a private lesson may be recommended to a beginner who needs extra help. The instructors associated with Movement arts are dedicated to continuing their own growth in yoga, by attending conferences and training programs throughout the year.

Beginners are encouraged to take the Yoga Beginners class before trying an All Levels Class. Here the concepts of hatha yoga are fully explained and students are guided into correct alignment and body positions. Once the student has a basic understanding, they are welcome to attend All Levels Classes where they can work on the principles they have learned and grow closer to a practice that is fully one's own. Regular, consistent practice creates a balanced, strong, and flexible body and mind. Erratic attendance is not recommended unless the student is practicing at home.

Naga yoga is very much a healing practice, and those with various chronic ailments are encouraged to participate. Many physicians are now recommending yoga to their patients with chronic illnesses. Yoga practitioners discover that a consistent practice relieves common aches and pains, particularly back pain. Postural problems are addressed and areas of chronic tension are released. Yoga is also highly recommended for athletes, who can create imbalances in their body through over-training. Regular yoga practice can help bring one's body back into balance, resulting in relief from pain and tension and enhancing performance.

"Naga," in Sanskrit, means snake, or serpent, which represent healing through transformation. The Naga yoga practice is flowing, supple, smooth, and healing.
